Portland's public transportation is one of the many reasons Portland has been named the most sustainable big city in the U.S. The Portland TriMet system includes the MAX Light Rail system, the Portland Streetcar and a large bus route system. MAX Light Rail system connects Portland, Gresham, Beaverton, Hillsboro and the Portland Airport. Trains run every 5-15 minutes roughly between 4:30 a.m. and midnight. The Portland Streetcar connects the South Waterfront, Portland State University and Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital in NW Portland. TriMet buses serve Multnomah, Clackamas and Washington counties. Many bus lines connect with MAX Light Rail and 16 lines provide Frequent Service (every 15 minutes or better, every day).

Driving in Portland The speed limit is 55 miles per hour on most highways around Portland, with some highway limits at 65 mph. Oregon drivers are safe and tend to tobey traffic and speed limits with an attention to both front and back seat buckled passengers. Oregon residents are required to get Oregon License plates and an Oregon driver's licenses within 30 days of establishing residency. If you have a current and valid out-of state license, you will only need to pass a written exam and an eye test in order to obtain your license. Portland is a city of bridges with at the Fremont Bridge, Steel Bridge, Broadway Bridge, Burnside Bridge, Morrison Bridge, Hawthorne Bridge, Ross Island Bridge and the Sellwood Bridge. There is always an available bridge to cross the Willamette when another is being raised for a passing ship.

Amtrak also offers train service to its many destinations across America for passengers to enjoy the countryside while traveling.

The Portland International Airport serves 13 million passengers annually and handles more than a quarter million tons of air cargo and provides service from 30 carriers, with more than 500 passenger flights daily. The new terminal has many new Northwest restaurants, shops and coffee stands to give you a rich flavor of Portland on your way in and out of PDX.
